Forum thread: notes
Mark Fertig 13 June 2014 22:02 |
Not sure what I am doing here! When trying to write a note for any student on a certain tutor group register, the error pasted below comes up. I have tried logging out and logging back in again as suggeste. How can I fix this?
I am not an administrator, but power teacher, so if any settings need to be changed, this will have to wait until Sam returns off paternity leave next month.
Thank you. Eleanor. Attendance

Dear Eleanor,
Thank you for your post.
First of all, Congratulations to Sam! Very exciting and I wish him all the best.
To be clear, I presume you're trying to attach a note to an attendance entry rather than anything to do with incidents...
I will look into this, but in the mean time if you're able to find out, it would be helpful to know if the same problem occurs when the teach whose register it is tries to add such a note. This might help determine if it's a permission thing. If it is, that teacher should go to the Class Details tab and ensure they've given write access to power teachers. This is the first thing I'd check anyway.
Yours,

Thank you Marcus for your swift reply! This is happening on all 'priority' classes as of yesterday, on All School Data (taking register for another person) and normally, as if it was your class.

Dear Eleanor,
I've had a more detailed look. This looks a bit more awkward given the message you've relayed and the circumstances you have now verified. I have found where this error is getting generated, but cannot work out exactly why. To get any further in resolving this will require some more information. I have just released an update to STEARsoft on this website (Version 5.8.4) which will hopefully give the extra information needed to solve this, or at least progress.
If you have access to the computer running STEARsoft, you need to download and install the new version. Once installed, on this computer, from the 'All Programs' part of the START menu, under the STEARsoft folder run 'STEAR Administrator' and set up the Log Files as follows:
Set a directory that you can access on the computer, making sure you specify a directory that exists. (Perhaps create one called 'C: stearlog'.) Then set to show priorities less than or equal to 12. Press the 'Set' button to save. Then at the top, press the 'Stop Server' button followed by the 'Start server' button. (if these details have already been set up, then just ensure that the prorities is not less than 12 - ie increase it if necessary, and take note of the directory).
Then try to add a note again to generate the error, find the log file with the extra details now recorded and either post it here or send it to me by email. The info in the log file should be harmless in a data security sense. It is plain text, so you can verify it first.
Thank you for your patience.
Yours,
Marcus. |

Will do that via a remote session with the admin computer at the school later. Also, a suggestion for you. As we are using this school wide next year, it would be nice if we could print off student timetables, like SIMS does. Would this be possible for September?
Thank you Eleanor |

Thank you. I'll look into that.

I have completed the update, and when back to add the note, it was fine for both classes I tried. What went on, I am not sure.
Also glad to hear you are looking into the student timetable printing option.
Best wishes,
Eleanor |

It's good the problem is resolved, though that sounds a little odd. If it happens again, we are at least in a position to collect some more info with the log file.
Yours,
