Forum thread: issues Running under server2012-R2-Std- Part 1
Louise Maughan 31 August 2017 12:07 |
Hi We are running into some real issues after a long while of stability. Not sure if the issue is OS related as there have been several complications. We installed STEAR on a svr2012 system having moved the installation and data off a mac running a windows VM under VMWare fusion. All good. Then, Apparently after a series of windows updates the staff could no longer sync with their IPads, and reverted to the old server instance on the VM system and apparently carried on with that for some time. I can only imagine that there were two instances running at the same time at that point - and looking at the dates it didnt look like either of them were syncing recently. At any rate I re-installed the software (latest version) on the svr2012 instance, and edited the teachers and class detail, detached the teacher and did a sync push from ipad to server populating the server with the up to date attendance detail required. All appeared OK. We then tested and it appeared fine. The server instance has a (name-svr) and the old VM has PC001 name. After a little more testing and logging in over the local network via web, the server appeared unresponsive. When I went onto the local server to check it it had appeared to revert to the name the VM on the mac was running- namely http://pc001 rather than the name it had been using, and indeed the name that was declared in the admin tool (which was the name. server name. All very very wierd. |

Dear Sue,
Thank you for your post. That does sound weird - and frustrating too.
STEARsoft just picks up the computer-name from the computer itself. It has no control over it and just reports to you what it's getting from the machine for your convenience. The connecting to the server running STEARsoft (and the address that is used) is all 'network connectivity' stuff that STEARsoft has no control over.
However - the autodiscovery process can be configured to send iPads any name you choose. This is to allow the use of an alias computer name. In case this is the problem, please go to the 'Administrator login' then 'Autodiscovery settings'. Just switch off and blank the settings here.
I can't think of anywhere else that the computer name comes up in STEARsoft, and like I say STEARsoft has no control over it - there's certainly no way it could change the name. That's some kind of DNS or network issue.
If the network is doing strange things (changing server name or ipaddress etc), that could in turn cause STEARsoft to become unresponsive as the network sockets STEARsoft was using to listen on will probably become invalid?
Hopefully this will at least allow you to rule some things out and focus your looking at the computer itself (perhaps don't even run STEARsoft, open a command prompt and type 'hostname' at various points to see who it thinks it is :) ).
Yours,

Just a note on this as I never reported back on the fix. The solution was simply to run the programme in windows compatibility mode (with win7) and all was well.

Thank you for this feedback.
If there are future compatibility issues, you may wish to consider the Cloud service we now provide to remove all the network/installation/hardware headaches. It also gives the benefit of access from anywhere, not just at school. This service is designed to be GDPR compliant using a GDPR compliant Data Processor, and for existing customers like yourself we could move you across with your existing license for no additional cost.
