James,

I'm assuming you are just using the PC web-interface. If this is relating to a Palm or iPhone, then please let me know so I can give an appropriate response.

The following might sound odd, but it could help - but be careful. It might be wise to use the 'Backups' option first (from the Options menu)

On the Home page in the Teacher area, in the left hand 'Options' panel click on 'Delete Class...'.  Then click (Delete...) next to the class in question.

This will bring up a more detailed 'picture' of the students in the class.  For each column of students, at the top of the column is a date range of validity.  Compare these date ranges against the lesson dates, and report back anything of note.  The right-most column (or only column) should have a date validity range including the lessons you are trying to view.

Once you have taken note, abandon the Delete by clicking 'Home' or 'Cancel'.

Marcus.

PS are you running the latest version (5.0.4)?

I have tried that and it doesnt work if I go back to a previous backup it comes up with the students names? But that is on the old times tables?

James,

Sorry, I'm not sure I was very clear...  I'd not intended you to actually delete the data and restore it in order to fix the problem.

I wanted you to do this, because on the delete screen, there is some useful information that might help you or me understand what might be causing your problem.

It would still be good to hear what validity dates are on that screen.

Do I also take it that the problem has started since changing your timetable? Has anything else changed since it was working?

If the details are too odd or difficult to describe and your data is not too sensitive, you could send me your data files so I can analyse and fix your problem.  Let me know if this is the case and I'll tell you how.

Yours,

Marcus.

PS Could you please confirm that you're not using the ODBC data import system.

For some reason it's started working again, I think it may have been something to do with my laptop (I am having many IT issues with it) sorry for any inconvenience

Glad it's working again.

If it happens again, check the PC clock in case the date is wrong, as that is one possible explanation I can think of.

In fact - if your PC clock has had problems, that can be the source of a lot of other issues (it happened to me at work a little over a year ago. All sorts of things suddenly stopped working. I had to correct the clock in the BIOS which had reset itself - and it fixed everything).

Yours,

Marcus.

Dear James,

Thank you for your perseverence and taking the time to give positive feedback.  It is good to hear you are finding STEARsoft useful.

You might already be doing this, but within your own school, probably the best way to enthuse others is to try and get STEARsoft set up on a computer at school that is always on (ideally a server) - at our school it required speaking nicely with the IT people.  It makes it much easier for other teachers to start using it, as they don't have to do all the download, install and Administrator stuff - just point their browser at the server once you've given them a username, and off they go.  Once a few teachers are using it, provided a school ID is given when adding students you also start getting useful messages if students turn up to one lesson, but not another.  It started that way at our school, and quickly gained in popularity, so 4 years later, the school has now been paying for the license for all 70 teachers for the last two years, also doing all legally required attendance with it.  The school also moved to use the ODBC interface to import all class and student data directly from the main school database.  Even easier for teachers :)  It has also given me more responsibility and involvement in a wider-school sense training teachers to get started, which has helped progress my professional development as a teacher.

I realise this may not be relevant to you necessarily James, but it might be a useful prompt for anyone else looking at this thread if not.

Yours,

Marcus.
