Forum thread: Buffer Overrun Error
Kevin McKay 15 November 2010 21:54 |
Component: Starting server.exe causes buffer problem. IE page does not load. Error Message: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Buffer overrun detected! Program: C:ProgramFiles Stearsoft Reg Stearserver.exe A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must be terminated.
The resulting problem is: My laptop crashes with this message on startup. I cannot access the server page -I have uninstalled and reinstalled after booting up in safe mode. Since we have admin and ordinary user accounts on our machines, I have reinstalled as an administrator, but problem keeps occurring. It also occurs from Windows when I try to run the server.exe program. Any hope? I like the program very much. Can I request that incidents create a colour as notes do? It would help when loooking over recent lessons on the iPod Touch. Thanks. |

Dear Kevin,
That doesn't sound good and I appologise in advance as this sounds like a bug in STEARsoft.
From what you describe, it sounds like the data-base files have some data that causes the problem you see. Anything else would have been fixed by the steps you have taken.
Ideally, provided there is not sensitive data that you don't wish to part with, the quickest way to solve this properly would be if you'd be happy to send me a copy of the data directory: C:ProgramFiles Stearsoft Reg data If you could zip the whole data directory and email it to me that would be perfect. I will email you separately so that you have my email address. I can then catch the crash (which I suspect will happen here given the behaviour you've described), find exactly what the problem is so that: 1) I can tell you how to fix it without any data loss (or send back a fixed set of data files) 2) We can fix STEARsoft so the problem doesn't happen again.
If the data is such that you are nervous about sending it to us, let me know and we can do some other things to solve the problem - but they are likely to be a bit slower and require more exchanges on this forum...
As said above, I will email you separately.
Yours,
Marcus Butler |

Dear Kevin,
I have now sent the separate email to reply to. Check your spam folder if such an email has not yet appeared in your normal inbox.
Thank you also for your suggestion. It sounds a good idea which would be good to explore. We'll need to weigh up a few things first; making sure that extracting this extra information and displaying it doesn't have a performance impact. I suspect this might be enough of an issue to hold us back - The data is in a different part of the database, and we struggled to get the performance we currently have on an iPod Touch. However, I wonder whether alternative solutions might suit your need better - if you could design a new screen, or a section below the attendance sheet would that be better? (for instance listing recent incidents for the whole class). If you still think highlighting like for notes would be best, we can look into that - though there will be a question of how to access the detail that the colour refers to...
Yours,
Marcus. |

Dear Kevin,
Thank you for your email. I'm just wanting to check you got my response. The zip file you sent was empty, so looks like needs sending again.
Yours,
Marcus. |
