Component: (stearsoft.co.ukSTEARsoft web interfacePalm-device) STEARsoft version: Support request: Hi Marcus, I just have a question about upgrading my Palm handheld. Which of the Palm smartphones will Stearsoft work on? I've tried to get a Palm TX (my first choice), but they are hard to track down nowadays, so I may have to settle for a Centro or Treo (not my first choice). Do I need a new license, or can I install in the new device using my existing license?
Thanks, Brendan Jones |

Hi Brendan,
Your second question is the easy one: Your current license will work on the new palm provided you use the same Hotsync ID (which you probably will want to do anyway to pick up your existing date-book etc).
With regard which Palm. STEARsoft has been tried and tested on a Palm TX, but not on a smartphone. Although I'd like to think they should work, being Palms, I'd not like to say yes or no for definite. There are a couple of contacts I have I'll try to see if I can borrow a smartphone long enough to try STEARsoft on it. If you know of anyone, you could do likewise. I'll let you know how I get on.
The other option is to go onto e-bay for more traditional models. If you don't need the WiFi etc you could even go for a cheap Zire31 or something. Or you could bid on the odd un-used Palm TX going there.
Kind Regards,
Marcus. |

I've tracked down access to a Treo - might be a few days until I actually manage to see the chap though. I suspect STEARsoft will work, but I wonder whether the screen will be big enough to be usable. I will report back.

I've now seen the Treo. Unfortunately it was a Windows Mobile variant, rather than a Palm OS one. However, the screen looked a decent size - much the same as other Palms on which STEARsoft runs sensibly. So although no closer for certain, confidence is increased that STEARsoft would work fine. If you go for this option, just make sure you get a Palm OS variant for STEARsoft to work.

Marcus, I've upgraded my Palm Tungsten E2 handheld to a TX. I'm now having trouble synching the roll book files to my new handheld. I think it might be because I named it differently to my old handheld in Hotsync. To cater for this, I attempted to create a new profile as part of my license, but I don't think it worked because I get a "No valid license" message and then a "Not Registered" screen saying I need to obtain a license key. As usual, my clumsiness with these things has resulted in a problem! Is it easily fixed? - Brendan Jones |

Hi Brendan,
You need to change your Hotsync ID on your new Palm TX to what it used to be on your E2. Fortunately it's easy once you know how. Here's how:
1) Start the Palm Desktop program on your PC 2) in the top-right corner in the users drop-down-list click on 'Edit Users...' 3) If it's still there, rename your correct E2 Hotsync ID to something else (eg 'B Jones Old'). 4) Then rename your new TX hotsync ID to your correct old E2 one (for which you have a STEARsoft license). 5) Press any OK buttons and close Palm Desktop. 6) Synchronise your new TX - your Hotsync ID should now be updated.
Setting up a new Hotsync ID for a new Palm, as you have done, and then changing it as above to enable your old license to work is actually the best, and safest way to move forward, so certainly no harm done.
Remember to run STEARsoft on your TX to set your STEARsoft username and password to get synchronisation working again.

Marcus,
Sorry, but I followed the instructions above and the Hotsync ID was changed successfully, but I still get the "License Invalid" message and a further message saying that the product is not yet registered when I try to progress. What do you suggest I try now?
Thanks, Brendan |

Dear Marcus,
..... and now I've dug the hole a bit deeper. I changed the Hotsync IDs back because I have to use the E2 at school while I sort out the sync problem with the TX. Now I find I'm blocked from the E2 registers as well, with the same message about invalid licenses.
I guess it must be something wrong with my Hotsync settings. I've checked and double checked but I can't see where I'm going wrong.
Sorry for making this a forum on my general ineptitude, but can you help me?
Thanks, Brendan Jones |

Hi Brendan,
Sorry, I should have looked more closely at your first error message. I'm wondering if the message was:
Title: License Invalid Message: No License information found
If so, it means the license hasn't got to your Palm yet. To fix this: 1) go to the PC web bit of STEARsoft 2) Go to Backups and make a backup (just to be safe) 3) Back on the main page go to "Palm Hotsync Option" 4) Change the "Current over-ride setting" to "Desktop overwrites handheld" 5) Click "Save Settings" 6) Perform a Hotsync.
If this still fails, have a look in your Hotsync Log to see if there is any information there - if there is, that may give you a direct clue how to resolve the problem.
If you are still stuck please carefully copy any Hotsync or Palm messages back here. If you are careful to give the exact wording, I should be able to quickly locate the problem and advise appropriately.
Best wishes

Dear Brendan,
One other thing,
If you've adjusted your STEARsoft account (in the Administrator area) to a different Hotsync ID, you'll need to change it back to your original Hotsync ID and then press the "Activate Full License" button to refresh (reload) the valid license. Pressing the "Activate Full License" is a subtle but important step here.
If this might be the case, try this before the steps described above (you'll still need to do a Hotsync though).

Hi Marcus, Thanks for the quick suggestions.Still no luck yet! I did a hard reset on the TX, then went through the steps that you mentioned. When I did the Hotsync, I got this Hotsync Log message:
STEARsoft sync Failed to start: Failed to read STEARsoft user details from the Palm. Check an up-to-date version of STEARsoft is installed on your Palm, and that you have setup your user details on it. STEARsoft synchronization failed
I'm not even worrying about the E2 - once the TX is up and running, I'll take Stearsoft off that one.
Hope this helps,
Thanks again, Brendan Jones |

Hello Brendan,
The Hotsync Log message is useful here.
As it says, make sure you have an up-to-date version of STEARsoft on your Palm. It should be version 4.1.2 1) To check this, start STEARsoft on your palm. 2) Ignore any error messages 3) Tap the menu button, and then choose "About STEARsoft"
The second suggestion is to check the user details. Similarly: 1) start STEARsoft on your palm. 2) Ignore any error messages 3) Tap the menu button, and then choose "Enter Username"
Fill in these details correctly with the username and password you have set up for access to your pc web-based attendance data.
Then do a Hotsync.
Can I also remind you of the tutorial pages on the STEARsoft website. The "How to activate STEARsoft on a Palm device" should be useful - especially the second half on setting up your Palm.
I hope this gets you there!
Best wishes,
Marcus. |

Hi Marcus, I have version 4.1.2 installed, and I'm pretty sure that the user ID is right. Is it possible to change it without causing more problems? That way I'd know for certain what it is. I'm still getting the Not Registered window saying "that the product is not yet registered or has an invalid key".
I'll have a look at the tutorials and get back to you.
Thanks, Brendan |
Brendan Jones 22 May 2009 10:59 |
Marcus, One thing I have noticed. The version on the Tx is 4.1.2, but on the PC is 4.1.6
Would this be an issue?
Will you be available via forum over the weekend? I'll really be working at fixing this before next week.
Thanks again, Brendan |
Marcus Butler (STEARsoft) 22 May 2009 20:28 |
Hi Brendan,
The version numbers are perfect and correct. The readme file for any future worry lists what the different versions are.
You can change (over-write) the username and password as many times as you like without worry, so have a go.
Check if the Hotsync messages have gone or have changed. That is what needs sorting first.
I shall be on-line from time to time over the weekend, so will hopefully be able to help.
Good luck.

Marcus,
Happy Days!!! All I did was change my password at the Teacher login and now everything works fine. It seems strange that that should work, because if I had the password right to change old to new, then the old password should have worked anyway (if you know what I mean)
Anyway, if things go sour, I'll be back to bother you again!!
Thanks for your usual helpfulness.

Brendan,
That is good news. Well done.
This should be made clear on that screen, as you DO need to enter your password again when a username is changed - this is to do with the strong security methods emplyed by STEARsoft.
All the best,
Marcus. |
