Forum thread: Non-UK Cloud Server location

Our servers are currently only based in the UK. If you need a server elsewhere in the world there are options to do this. We currently use Digital Ocean who have good world-wide coverage (please see their website for an up-to-date list of countries they cover). However, having your Cloud Server hosted elsewhere in the world will incur additional hosting and administration costs of up to 150GBP per year. Thank you for your enquiry. Yes and No. Yes: You can use the cloud system from Australia - just as you can access this forum from Australia. It will be less responsive, but we could test this to see if it was still OK (let me know if this is the only issue and you'd like to test it)... No: At present, the data is held in the UK, not Australia. Could a server be set up in Australia (for the data to be held in Australia)? Again, yes and no: No: Unfortunately Digital Ocean doesn't have quite as good a worldwide coverage as I thought, and doesn't include Australia. Yes: I could use an alternative Australian based company that hosts servers, but this would start incurring quite a bit of extra cost (I've identified mammoth.com.au as an example with their prices starting at 300 Australian Dollars per year onto which there would likely be taxes and administration costs). |

Update: Good news. I've found a more cost-effective cloud provider that lets me host a Cloud server in Sydney. It's more in-line with the server style and costs budgeted in the UK. So provided your installation is for over 100 students, the price will be the same as advertised on the STEARsoft website. The difference will be that it will be using a server from vpsservers.com rather than digitalocean.com so the physical security of servers may be different. If this is important to you, please check any details on the vpsservers.com website to ensure you are happy. |
