Forum thread: Where is Stearsoft saved

Hi,

I have just purchased a full license after the trial period. However, Stearsoft isn't on the other PCs on the network. We are on a network with different drivers: One for teachers, one for Administration, and another for Teachers. I can find Stearsoft in the Start menu when logging in on the Admin computers, but not when logging in on the teachers' computers.

Have I saved Stearsoft in the wrong place during the trial download?

Many thanks

Dear Hannah,

You should only install STEARsoft on one computer.  That one computer should be a computer that is always on (preferably a server computer).  On that one computer, open STEARsoft from the Start menu (in particular, opening 'STEAR Control').  When you've started STEAR-Control on that computer take a note of the web address (starting http://) in the line before the 'Go' button.  On all the other computers (however you're logged in), you should open a web browser and type in that web address (exactly as shown, including the :13031/ at the end).  You can then save this web page as a favourite, either within your web-browser, or by putting a shortcut on the desktop.

If you have any internal web pages (often called an intranet) for information in your school, you could put this above mentioned web-address as a link on your internal web-site so that teachers and other staff can click on it. Otherwise, an effective way of getting lots of people started is to send round an email with the web-address in.

The concept here is that STEARsoft runs on one computer, and all the other computers can use STEARsoft via a web-browser that connects to this one computer using the particular web address.  Hopefully, people will be used to using a web-browser, so will know how to bookmark and return to a favourite page.

I hope that helps, but do ask further if you're still confused or have further questions.

Yours,

Marcus

Thanks,

If I have saved our term dates through the admin pages, and the class lists through the teachers pages, will all of this info appear when teachers access stearsoft through the web address, or will it have to be re-entered?

Thanks

Hi again,

When I type the web address in on any other computer, the page can't be found. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Dear Hannah,

It's a bit puzzling if you had this all working with the trial, as the full version is no different - it just allows more attendance sessions to be recorded.  Anyway...

Provided you've installed STEARsoft just once on one computer (which sounds like you have), yes, all the info will appear when teachers access STEARsoft through the web address.

It sounds like you might have a sophisticated network with some kind of separation, perhaps different virtual networks or subnetworks within your school network.  In order to enable all computers (both teacher and administration) to access STEARsoft, you'll probably need to speak with whoever set up the network.  They may need to explicitly allow communication between the different parts of the network to let STEARsoft work.

The information they will need is that communication is on port 13031 over TCP/IP.  Network packets on this port should be allowed across the network.

Other possible solutions might be:
- Configuring any firewall to let STEARsoft access the network (from what already is working this sounds unlikely to be the problem)
- If your network doesn't have a DHCP server, computer names may not work and using IP address numbers may get things working.  To use IP address numbers, go to the computer STEARsoft is installed on, open a command prompt and type ipconfig.  Several numbers will follow, one set of which is the IP Address - it should be 4 numbers separated with dots.  try the web page again, but using these numbers instead of the computer name.  For example if the web address (as described above) was:  http://yourcomputername.something:13031/  and the IP Address found using ipconfig is 2.4.6.8   then in your web browser enter http://2.4.6.8:13031/  instead.

I hope this gets you there.

Yours,

Marcus.
