Forum thread: New SERVPC

Hi Marcus, We have a new PC for the server and wish to switch STEARsoft to that computer. Please could you clear the Computer ID so this is possible? Regards, Mark

Hi Mark,

This should already work. Have you tried it yet? (pressing the 'Activate license' button in the administrator area.) You get 3 'slots' to allow for a computer change and/or keeping a backup server. It looks like when I freed up the IDs last time for Sam I reset it back to the full 3 slots...

If you've tried it and it doesn't let you on, please get back to me with any error it is giving.

Yours,

Marcus.

Having changed network providers and PC's, we can't get STEARsoft to sync up between the networks. I have gave Sam a ring and he doesn't know what is happening either. I have allowed Firewall to allow access to STEAR Control and STEAR Administrator. Please help! Mark.

It sounds like your routers may need configuring to correctly forward TCP and UDP traffic on port 13031 if you have network changes too.  The Install part of the user guide (Technical Administrator section) gives a little more detail.
Does STEARsoft work directly on on the new PC with the server?

Marcus

Hi Marcus,

Sam here. The school has just changed network providers, and have new routers etc. I have spoken to the network/router provider and they said "We haven't got any kind of system tools to check the routing of TCP-IP traffic on port 13031" (I don't think they know what they are on about). I have tried playing around with the Router Manager and there is a Port Forward option, but not port 13031, it has things like HTTP, HTTPS etc.?

I won't have access to Mark's inbox, so please could you drop me a reply via sam(at)shensley.co.uk

Kindest Regards,

Sam

Sam, Mark,

Firstly, Mark please forward this to Sam.

Mark's post on the 15th hinted at more than 1 network, presumably joined in some way with network infrastructure. Trouble-shooting such a network is not something I can do remotely. It is something that may require paying a skilled technical network administrator for. They will need to know that the traffic is as described above in order to trace problems. There may be caching issues to do with any DNS server you have and even with a DHCP server when networks are reconfigured. There are likely to be other things to consider too. These things really need a technical expert on site to resolve. Hopefully you can point them to your previously working setup so they can see what is required. You can also point them to the details in this forum thread and to the user guide.

I hope you can obtain the necessary help to get to the bottom of this. Should a technical network engineer require more than that which I have referred you to, please do post back with their specific questions.

If it is not a complex network and the problem is most likely with the new PC you may need to additionally tell the firewall to allow traffic through on port 13031. Also ensure you haven't got more than 1 firewall active which can cause confusion.

You could also try the old PC on the new network to determine whether it's the PC or the network that has the problem.

Best wishes,

Marcus

Thanks for your prompt reply Marcus,

I have played around with the Windows Firewall settings on the SERVPC today, and it seems that when Windows Firewall is turned off, STEARsoft will run network wide, even with the router extenders :).

However when Windows Firewall is turned on, STEARsoft won't work at all, even with access to STEAR Control and STEAR Administrator allowed. Obviously, we need Windows Firewall turned on, but what settings need to be changed?

Kindest Regards,

Sam

Sam,

That sounds like good detective work. I'd not thought of switching off the firewall to test if that was the issue. So simple and so informative. Genius.

Looking at the detail you give, the critical application you need to give permission to is stearserver.exe (not the two you mention).  In full, most likely:
C:-Program Files-STEARSoft-Reg-stearserver.exe
(with slashes instead of dashes)

The other possible thing to try is Adding a Port (13031) as an exception.

Hopefully that will do it. Do let me know.

Yours with best wishes,

Marcus

Allowing stearserver.exe worked. We're running again as normal :). Just another quick question whilst I have access here, I will be returning to the school in September (as a Computer Science teacher), and would like to sync both my iPhone and iPad to the STEARsoft app, but it only allows one device, is there a way to get round this, or is it best to just use the web interface for one device?

Kindest Regards,

Sam

That's good news. Thanks for feeding that back, and sorry I didn't pick up on that as a likely problem earlier.

Unfortunately there isn't a way round only being able to sync one device, so one on the web unfortunately. You can easily swap device though by releasing the active one when logged in as a power teacher. This forces a full one-direction sync though so it's a bit clunky and prone to accidental data loss if you do this on a very regular basis.

Yours,

Marcus
