So sorry if this is in the wrong section but could not find a simple way to email you. I am writing to ask if your program is suitable for our school. We wish to transfer to a computer attendance register in a simple form. We are a pupil referral unit with 30 pupils on roll. We have a simple timetable - ampm 5 days a week. We have lots of reasons why pupils will not be with us as they are only here for fixed sessions per week. They attend other sites for different education. Can we use multiple absence codes on your system? Have you any other referral units that use this system? Any help you can give would be much appreciated. Many thanks

Dear Christine,
Thank you for your message. This is a perfect place to put it.
From what you describe, I suspect STEARsoft will suit your needs well: 1) Against any attendance mark you can add a code letter (so 26 options). You can define what they mean. You can add codes to 'present' as well as 'absent' marks. You can also attach a short written note or comment. 2) STEARsoft is popular in simple situations, as the majority of customers buy licenses to cover just one or two classes. The manual import feature will also get you set up very quickly. 3) The summary and counters features will add up statistics for you. 4) To be honest, I don't know if there are other referral units using STEARsoft as it's an off-the-shelf product with minimal registration required. 5) You can try STEARsoft for free, and for 30 students should be up and going in minutes. You can then see exactly what it does.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Christine,
A couple of other things: - You just need to install STEARsoft on one computer (ideally a server-type computer that stays on all the time). You can then access STEARsoft from any computer on your network using an ordinary web-browser. - There are a few 'non-obvious' features, like holding down a keyboard letter whilst clicking the mouse to quickly add a register attendance code. It is worth reading the help (or taking time to follow a tutorial) to get the most out of STEARsoft.
Finally, do ask again if you have any further specific questions on trying STEARsoft out.
Sincerely, again,
Marcus. |

Heena,
Thank you for your post. If your school is Christine's school then she may see you post and be able to help you. Probably best you see someone in person for some support/training though. Alternatively watching the getting started tutorial may help...

When trying to add classes I keep getting a screen which doesn't allow me and is saying to update data (ODBC)? |
Marcus Butler (STEARsoft) 22 December 2015 13:32 |
Thank you Elaine for your post.
That sounds like you have a school deployment of STEARsoft and that your school administrator has restricted this. The intention would be for you to not have to enter data yourself but import it from a school database, which you'd do using the 'update data (ODBC)' option on the left menu of your home screen. I'd suggest contacting your school administrator of STEARsoft who can change restrictions or give specific help as appropriate.
Yours,
Marcus |

PS The administrator should go to the 'Data control and locks' option in the Administrator section of the web interface. The 'prevent' tick-box next to 'Adding a new class' should be unticked if this was previously ticked in error.
If this does not appear to be the problem, then please post back here with more details. |
