Forum thread: Cannot get ipad app to reach server

We successfully used Stearsoft as a web-based programme (on a Mac running a virtual Windows machine.) We have just purchased new iPads and downloaded the lite program but despite following all the tutorials we have had several error codes and have not been able to synchronise. We do not understand how to obtain the address of our Stearsoft server manually. We have tried entering 'my computer with the port number 13031 but this has also failed.
Please can you advise what we can do next. We have tried using the raw ip address too.
Thank you

Dear Sue, thank you for your Post.

You should not need to obtain the address manually.  The server should be 'discovered' automatically provided both iPad and Mac are on the same network.

If the server is 'auto discovered', but the errors come after that, then please post the error message here so I can help.

If the server is not being discovered then my number one suspicion is that the connection is being blocked by a firewall.  The easiest way to verify this is to temporarily switch off any firewall running on the Mac.  Once this is identified as the issue, you will need to add STEARsoft as an exception to be allowed through the firewall.  Auto discovery should then work and all should be straight-forward.

I'm not familiar with running windows as a virtual machine within a Mac and what problems this might raise, so the firewall might be within the virtual machine or within the Mac bit (or both) - or there might be some more fundamental difficulty with network connections when running a virtual machine...

Do let me know how you get on, as others may like to know anything you learn in trouble-shooting using a virtual-machine.

Yours,

Marcus
