Hi Having previously had a trial version I've now purchased a licence but cannot activate my handheld. I have followed all instructions and downloaded and installed the 4.06 update but still my Palm says "This product is not registered or has an invalid key." What have I not done or done wrong?

Hi Mike,
I suspect the Palm maybe in a state where it thinks it's sychronised, but isn't quite. Hopefully the following will fix your problem:
Go to the web interface where it shows your time-table (the main login to your registers part). From the options choose "Palm Hotsync Options". Change the "Current over-ride setting" to "Desktop overwrites handheld" (and press "Save settings"). Then resynchronise your Palm.
That will ensure all licenses you've activated have been sent fully to your palm.
Let me know how you get on.
Regards,
Marcus. |

P.S. If that doesn't work, a slightly more involved procedure can be done. Though I'd hope you don't need to do this, I'll put the details here in case anyone refers to this thread for future help:
1) Stop the STEARsoft server (run STEAR Administrator from the windows start button to do this) 2) Locate the data files - by default in Program Files-STEARsoft-Reg-data 3) In the subdirectory for the relevant user account open db-nameval.csv 4) duplicate entries for key????? items would be a sign of a problem. For safety, delete all rows with key????? as the Name. 5) Save and close the file. 6) Start the STEARsoft server 7) In the web interface of STEARsoft, go to the administrator area 8) Go to the "Enter license codes" screen and press the "Download my license code" button. 9) Exit the administrator area and log in to your user account. 10) Repeat the setting of "Palm Hotsync options" as described in my first post to this thread. 11) Synchronise your palm. |

P.P.S. When opening and saving the .csv file, be careful not to change the type of file. If you open it in a spreadsheet application, be sure to save it back out in the same .csv format.
If it all goes horribly wrong, you can delete the file and STEARsoft will recreate it. It just means you'll loose any personalised settings you made. |

Dear Marcus Many thanks for your detailed replies. I've tried all the above - no joy! After doing the hotsync the log reads "Stearsoft synchronisation failed. Error - Username does not match hotsync ID" BUT IT DOES!!! Help!!
A thought - excuse my ignorance but does it matter that I changed my laptop (on which the original trial account was created and STEARsoft installed) about 10 months ago? Could this be what has screwed it up? If so is there a way out of it? Can I somehow remove it from the handheld and reinstall it?

For anyone searching in the future, the exact wording of the error was I trust: Error: Username doesn't match Hotsync ID
All is not lost. Your Hotsync IDs do indeed match. The upgrade is not a problem except for an extra setting required on the Palm as detailed below. The problem is the specification of your username (that you use to access your web-interface of registration sheets) on your Palm device: I trust you synchronised the latest version of STEARsoft to your Palm (4.0.0). On your Palm, start STEARsoft. It will complain of bad license, but tap the menu button and select "Enter Username". Set your username and password here (note that this is not your hotsync ID, but the username you set up for yourself on STEARsoft). Once you have done this, you should be able to synchronise.
If you've not already seen it, you may find the tutorial titled "How to activate STEARsoft on a Palm device" helpful if my description is not clear.
Good luck!

Dear Marcus
You are a star! That did it. You were right about the exact error message wording also, sorry for getting that wrong.
Many thanks.

Dear Mike,
Glad you're up and working :)
The error message was plenty accurate enough for me to interpret it, and usefully so.
I hope you have some trouble-free happy use of STEARsoft now.
Kind regards,
Marcus. |
