Forum thread: New school computers

Hi, the school is investing in a new set of computers ready for new year. This will mean the current STEARsoft will be wiped out. Is it possible to transfer my STEAR acount onto a new computer without loosing any data?
Thanks

Dear Matthew,

A good question; something we should put in the User Guide perhaps...

Yes, it is very possible and quite straight-forward when you know how. So here's how:

1) Install STEARsoft on the new computer and set the administrator password (in STEAR Administrator).
2) Take a note of where the STEARsoft data is.  This is detailed in the User Guide within 'Data and Backups'.  It's usually C:/Program Files/STEARSoft/Reg/data (but with backslashes rather than forward ones)
3) Use the 'STEAR Administrator' program (that gets installed in the windows 'all programs' menu) to 'Stop server'. Do this on BOTH computers.
4) Now copy everything across from the data directory on the old computer to the new computer - easiest is to delete (or rename) the data directory on the new computer, then to copy the whole data directory from the old computer.
5) Use the 'STEAR Administrator' program to 'Start server' on both computers again.
6) Use a web browser to login to the administrator section of STEARsoft on the new computer and re-activate your license (just press the button).

That's it.  All user accounts, settings, passwords, data etc should all be transferred.  If you use an alias and redirect to the new computer, no-one will even be aware of the change.

The stopping and starting of servers is a key step (particularly on the new computer), because data is cached in STEARsoft.

Please note that the reactivation process is only permitted for a limited number of computer changes. Legally, a license only covers one installation, but that installation can be moved from one computer to another. Currently, 3 different computer installations are permitted in this way. If you need to make more changes than this, that is permitted too, but you would need to request this on this forum, at which point we can manually reset your computer counter. (Reactivation on any single computer is unlimited).

I hope that makes sense and helps.

Yours,

Marcus
